Seth Ford-Young has
been performing since 1989. From age 16 to 20 he played in the
Washington D.C. area at
clubs like The Bayou, D.C.
Space, and the Safari Club. In 1993 Seth moved to Santa Cruz, California
to study Jazz and Classical music at Cabrillo College. There Seth studied
Jazz theory, performance and arranging under Ray
Brown. He also studied "Classical" theory, musicianship,
vocal technique and composition. Soon Seth started working
as a tutor to other students of theory and arranging , and as an
accompanist to various ensembles. Seth also began to work
professionally as a Jazz bassist and developed relationships
with artists, like Smith, Sasha, and Gail Dobson.
In 1997 Seth moved to San Francisco to study music at San Francisco
State University with Jeff Chambers, Shinji Eshima, Eddie Marshall,
Wayne Wallace, and Ronald Caltibiano. There Seth delved into many
subjects including Composition, Orchestration, 20th century techniques,
and Jazz and Classical bass. During his time at SFSU Seth found
himself performing more and more, becoming a regular in the
city's Jazz scene, while also performing at school in the University
Chamber Orchestra (principal), Big Band, and small chamber groups
and Jazz combos. This busy schedule led to Seth leaving SFSU
to pursue a quickly growing career in music. Since 1998 Seth has
been a full-time musician, performing several times a week as well
as teaching bass, voice, and theory. Seth has also worked as a session
player and has written scores for independent films. He has even
performed, engineered and produced music for a line of musical teddy
bears. Today Seth is focused on growing as a bassist, vocalist,
and composer, while performing in the Bay area, and touring the
west coast and south western states.
